Perez: Opening Round 71 At PGA Championship

Pat Perez is back in action for this week’s PGA Championship and fired an opening-round 71 at Valhalla.

Consistency proved to be the name of Perez’s game under optimum conditions in Louisville late Thursday morning. Perez wrapped the day with 16 pars, one birdie and a bogey.

Perez opened with four consecutive pars before carding his lone birdie of the day on the par-four fifth. Some long birdie opportunities were there for Perez holes one through four, leaving some very makable pars.

The bogey on five was the result of a 287-yard drive into a fairway bunker, followed by a 150-yard second shot to the right green-side bunker. A six-footer for par didn’t fall, leaving Perez a 17″ bogey putt.

Eight consecutive pars followed, including some solid saves. On the par-four sixth, Perez hit his drive 277 yards to the left rough and a second shot went 193 yards, again to the left rough. A third shot flew 95 yards to the green, leaving a three-inch putt for par.

On the par-three eighth, Perez stuck his opening shot 190 yards to the green, where he dropped an eight-footer for par. On the par-five tenth, a 13-footer putt for par.

The day’s lone birdie came on the par-three fourteenth, where Perez hit his 203-yard tee shot to within 14′ and dropped his longest putt of the afternoon, getting back to even on the day.

Four consecutive pars closed out the day, with a missed birdie opportunity on the par-five eighteenth, where a 13-footer for birdie came up short, leaving a 9″ par putt.

Perez wrapped the day averaging 284.5 yards in driving distance, 61.11% in greens-in-regulation and 71.43% in driving accuracy.

For Perez’s first major of the season—and in the wake of swing changes and a recent slump—it was a solid opening round at Valhalla on Thursday.

Friday’s round gets underway late afternoon—2:40 p.m. local time—where Perez will again be paired with Brendan Steele and Rob Corcoran
