T69th Finish For Perez At OHL Classic

Pat Perez got off to a blazing start on Thursday, firing at 66 at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba, but slowed down over the next three rounds and wound up wrapping the event T69th.

Six birdies and one bogey were the key to an almost-flawless opening round, but the setbacks began on the back nine Friday, with Perez losing five strokes over a five hole-span, but a furious front-nine rally had Perez back at even after four birdies between No. 2 and No. 6.

Saturday’s “moving day” round was again plagued by too many bogeys. Perez went on to birdie No. 13, No. 3 and No. 5, but mistakes on No. 11, No. 14, No. 18 and No. 9 led to a third round 72.

Two-under on the event entering Sunday, Perez found trouble on the par-four fourteenth—a hole he went double bogey-bogey-double bogey on the final three days of the event. He responded with a comeback birdie on the par-three fifteenth and was plus-two at the turn, having bogey the day’s opening hole, as well.

On the front nine, a bogey-bogey-par start was followed by birdies over three of the next four holes. Perez went on to close the event with a bogey on the par-four ninth, carding a final round 72 at El Camaleon.

Perez averaged 282.5 yards driving distance on the week, 62.50 in driving accuracy percentage and 59.72 in greens-in-regulation. He picked up 18 birdies on the week, but gave back a dozen bogeys and had three costly doubles, Friday and Sunday combined.

With the PGA Tour fall season coming to a close, Perez will play one final event at Pebble Beach for Callaway Golf this week (Callaway Pebble Beach Invitational) and will spend the rest of the year working with new swing coach Drew Steckel as well as trainer Garrett Holland in regards to an off-season fitness regime.

Perez will be back in full PGA Tour action the week of January 12th, heading back to Honolulu for the Sony Open at Waialae Country Club, where he finished T7th last season.
