71-71 Gets Perez To Weekend At Valhalla

Pat Perez endured some late afternoon shower en route to a second round 71 at Valhalla on Friday. Even par after 36 holes, Perez will see the weekend at the PGA Championship, teeing off at 9:00 a.m. Saturday morning, looking to gain some ground.

Rory McIlroy leads a nine-under, with Jason Day and Jim Fyruk a stroke back. Three players are tied at seven-under.

Perez got off to a solid start Friday, birdying the par-five tenth. After hitting his drive 272 yards to the left fairway, Perez was on the green in three and knocked down a 28-foot birdie for a four.

Five consecutive pars followed, before giving one back on the par-four sixteenth—eventually facing a 36′ par putt that came up short.

Another string of pars—seven in a row—as the rain came down at Valhalla. Perez eventually bogeyed the par-four sixth—plus-one on the event and on the cut line—but came back strong with a birdie on the par-five seventh.

After hitting his drive 276 yards to the left rough, a 175-yard shot to the left intermediate followed. Perez put his third shot on the green, leaving himself a 14-footer for birdie, which he dropped.

Back-to-back pars closed out the round—with a potential birdie opportunity on nine—an another 71 was in the books. Perez averaged 281.3 yards driving distance, 63.89% greens-in-regulation and 64.29% in driving accuracy percentage.
